ddIs Hypnotherapy Safe? (I Had That Question, Too!)
And the answer is a resounding YES!
Hypnosis is a natural, healthy state that you (and I!) actually experience all the time throughout the day – like that moment just before you drift off to sleep, or when you’re deep in thought while driving. There has literally never been a single documented case of anyone getting “stuck” in hypnosis. A qualified hypnotherapist ensures a super safe and supportive environment, empowering you to maintain control through the entire process.
Understanding Safety: Best and Worst Case Scenarios
When we talk about safety in hypnotherapy, it’s not about physical harm, but about emotional and psychological well-being.
-
Worst-Case Scenario (Misconception): The common fear is of being controlled, manipulated, or revealing secrets against your will. This simply isn’t how therapeutic hypnosis works. You are always aware and in control, and you would never do or say anything under hypnosis that goes against your core values or desires. Another misconception is that you might “relive” trauma in a way that is re-traumatizing. While hypnotherapy can access memories, a skilled therapist ensures that this is done safely, often by observing from a distance or with a sense of emotional detachment, rather than fully re-experiencing the pain.
-
Best-Case Scenario: The best-case scenario is profound healing, breakthroughs in understanding yourself, rapid shifts in unwanted patterns (like my journey with boundaries and unnecessary apologies!), and a deep sense of peace and empowerment. It’s about getting to the root of issues efficiently and releasing old burdens. For many, like me, it feels like “getting busy healing” at a subconscious level, leading to tangible, positive changes in daily life.
It’s Different for Everyone
While the core principles of hypnotherapy are consistent, the experience itself is deeply personal and unique to each individual. Your journey, your subconscious mind, and your specific needs will shape how each session unfolds. What feels intensely visual for one person might feel more sensory or conceptual for another, as I experienced in my own sessions.
For individuals healing from extreme trauma, such as combat veterans, hypnotherapy can be incredibly effective and is indeed safe when conducted by a properly trained and experienced therapist specializing in trauma. The safety protocols, such as “resource states” (creating a mental safe space) and the ability to “float above” or observe difficult memories rather than re-experiencing them directly, are paramount.
However, “safe” doesn’t mean “easy” or “without any emotional ripple effects.” Healing from deep-seated trauma often involves processing difficult emotions and memories. This process, even when guided safely, can bring up thoughts, feelings, or even mild emotional discomfort after a session.
Experiencing thoughts or feelings afterward is a normal part of processing. It doesn’t mean the therapy was unsafe or that something went wrong. It often signifies that your subconscious mind is continuing to integrate the insights and changes initiated during the session. Some things I’ve noticed:
-
Increased awareness: Suddenly noticing patterns or triggers I wasn’t fully aware of before.
-
Emotional release: Feeling a wave of emotion (sadness, anger, relief) as old energy shifts.
-
Dreams: More vivid or meaningful dreams as my subconscious processes the sessions and my brains new wiring.
-
Introspection: Spending more time thinking about insights gained.
A good hypnotherapist will prepare you for these possibilities and provide tools and support for navigating them. The goal isn’t to erase all negative feelings forever, but to help you process them in a healthy way, reduce their intensity, and build resilience.
